The February Update: Where Have I Been?!



Well it’s February 5th, where did January go?! I promised this New Year’s Resolutions update last week, but so many great things have been happening in my life that I just never got around to it! I feel so blessed so far this year, I can’t complain about anything.

The main change in my life has been my employment situation! Hence why my blog posts have been few and far between this month.

A little backstory, since most of you didn’t know me before this blog:

I quit my full-time job as an athletic trainer in August with the support of my loving fiancé and family. After working there for two and half years and pouring my soul into the programs I ran there, I was physically and emotionally drained. I was burnt out, continually sick, stressed out over the littlest things, and on the verge of a breakdown.  My relationship was suffering because I was never present, my “friendships” with most of my coworkers were borderline toxic, and I was constantly in a negative state of mind. I was told that I was a bad athletic trainer, I was told that no one liked me, I was told that I’d never be considered for a promotion, I was told that I couldn’t transfer to a new position because I was a female, I was told that I should just move back to Michigan, and I was told that I should just give up and let Matt support me.

Of course there were great parts and some great relationships were made of my time there (if you used to work with me and you’re taking time out of your day to read this, know that I appreciate that and our friendship!).

However, I couldn’t continue to live with that lifestyle. So in August of last year I putting in my three weeks notice and walked out, praying that I wasn’t making the worst decision of my life.

Spoiler alert: it was the best decision of my life!

Without the toxic burnout feeling (proper sleep for the first time since my freshman year of college), I was able to focus on things that made my happy. Things like spending quality time with Matt & Shasta (our cat), cooking and starting this blog (yay!), working out and traveling (and getting engaged in Hawaii). I was also able to grow my relationship with my Dad by starting to help him with his travel business.

Fast forward to early January: I was starting the new year with all these goals and plans for the new year and then suddenly I got a phone call with a job offer out of the blue.

Back in September, shortly after I quit my job, I had gotten a call from a physical therapy company that was building a practice in Seattle and wanted to hire an athletic trainer to help them building the athletic training and performance program in their new location. At the time, they didn’t have the budget to hire someone on, so we dropped the conversation on good terms and I had moved on.

Then the phone rang in January and they had a position for me and wanted me if I still wanted to continue the conversation. Of course I did! This position was made for me and the exact position I wanted in my old job but was never considered for. I can use my skills and knowledge to help a company whose practice and values I believe in. I am supported, encouraged, welcomed, and mentored by professionals in my field. On top of all of that, I am allowed to choose my own schedule to support work life balance and allow me to continue working with my father and on this blog.

Over the last six months I’ve become a whole new person I feel like. I’m happy and fun to be around (I think!), I have a positive outlook on life, and I’m continually grateful for what I have.

Moral of this story? Know your worth, work hard for what you want, and what you deserve will come when you least expect it.

Self-care: Schedule time for this into my daily routine and don’t let other people’s needs, wants, or problems bother you during that time.

I’d say I’m doing average at this! I need to work more on the “scheduled” aspect of this, but I’m doing better on the second half. I knew that I needed to get this post done this weekend and the best time to work it into my schedule was when I could have been cooking dinner, but I texted Matt saying dinner would be late and I’m ok with that!

Waking up earlier: Ideally, I’d love to be up at 6am and spend some time catching up on emails and busy work, so that when the sun finally rises I can get outside for some self-care and not feel lazy!

Well this one has been forced on me a little, I now need to be at the bus stop or starting the commute at 7am to get to downtown Seattle on time for work! But I do love how I feel when I get up at 5:30 or 6am and have time to relax as I get ready for work. I think I was slightly hating the lack of structure in my day before.

More Active Dates with Matt: We just need to be better about planning them in advance, or else Netflix & Chill it is.

I’d say this has gotten better! We went to a beer fest last weekend with friends and got a yearly Washington Beer Lover’s (appropriately named ‘WABL’) membership, so last night we visited a couple breweries and got ‘stamped’ in our beer passports. Planning to do more things like this!

Keep my Spending Freeze: You can read more about that here!

Well, this was a fail as soon as I got my new job. I needed a few new things for my work wardrobe, and that kind of opened the floodgates of buying things I don’t need. I also have been buying more coffee since there is a Starbucks literally next door (this is Seattle after all, there is a Starbucks literally next door to every office downtown).

Good thing about resolutions? You can always start over! February is a new and fresh start for the spending freeze.

Less Waste: Planning on implementing small ways to reduce waste.

I’ve done a few things on my list, but not as many as I’d like to! I really need to pick up some reusable/ecofriendly Ziploc type bags and produce bags, that is the main culprit right now!

Best of all: My Blog Goals: Be more organized, be less stressed, collaborate more with bloggers, and explore more recipes!

100% less organized for sure, I’ve struggled to find time to focus on this blog and therefore have fallen far behind! However, this has allowed me to be less stressed: I’m just going with the flow and not worrying about my made up deadlines.  I am going to try and be more consistent with my posts with 1-2 a week, which brings me to the bloggers collaboration: I’m excited that I was able to set up a weekly coffee date with other local lady bosses/bloggers to meet and work on our own independent projects but in the same space to support and encourage each other! I’m very excited to meet all these ladies and have time set aside each week to focus on this blog.

So what are my goals for January? I don’t have any specific new ones!

I want to continue to focus on my January goals, my new job, this blog and being happy! Oh, and wedding planning- but that is a whole other post!
